Is Corporate IT in Crisis in the Era of Constant Digital Transformations?

Corporate IT is struggling to keep pace with business demands. Despite massive investments in technology, digital transformation programs often fail to deliver real business value. Why? Because IT and business are still speaking different languages.

Bridging IT and Business while building future digital HR operation
The missing link

The Real Gap: Business vs. IT

Business leaders expect strategic, outcome-driven digital solutions, while IT teams focus on technical execution. Without a structured bridge, digital projects become fragmented, reactive, and misaligned with business goals.

Many IT functions are:

Too focused on technology rather than business value.

Overloaded with operational tasks, leaving little room for strategy.

Lacking business acumen and digital transformation leadership.

A 2023 McKinsey report found that 70% of digital transformation initiatives fail, often due to misalignment between IT and business. Yet, many organizations either underutilize Business Architects and Analysts or fail to hire true experts.

Business Architects and Analysts Can Bridge the Gap— If Positioned Correctly

When Business Architects and Analysts are empowered, they:

✔ Translate business strategy into IT execution.

✔ Provide a structured approach to digital transformation.

✔ Prevent wasted IT investments by aligning projects with business needs.

Yet, these roles are often missing, undervalued, or filled with generalists rather than true experts.

The Rise of Agile – A Symptom, Not a Solution

The absence of Business Architecture has led to widespread adoption of Agile, Kanban, and iterative development models. While Agile improves execution, it doesn’t solve strategic misalignment.

Instead, companies end up with:

Siloed Agile teams working on disconnected initiatives.

Scrum Masters optimizing delivery, but without a clear business vision.

More “work in progress”, but not necessarily better business outcomes.

Agile was never meant to replace strategic planning, yet in many digital transformation programs, it has become a substitute for proper Business Architecture.

Agile Alone Won’t Solve the IT-Business Gap

Agile is great for execution, but it doesn’t define:

✔ Enterprise-wide priorities

✔ Business capability roadmaps

✔ IT investment alignment with business goals

A 2022 Gartner study found that companies that combine Agile with strong Business Architecture achieve far greater success than those relying on Agile alone.

The Way Forward

To bridge the IT-business gap and drive real transformation, organizations must:

✅ Position Business Architects at the core of digital programs to align strategy with execution.

✅ Empower Business Analysts as business-IT translators, not just documentation specialists.

✅ Use Agile as an execution tool, not as a replacement for business strategy.

✅ Measure success by business outcomes, not just IT project completion rates.

The corporate IT function is in crisis, and the lack of Business Architecture has led to a reactionary reliance on Agile methodologies. While Agile is valuable, it won’t solve strategic misalignment. The real solution is to position Business Architects and Analysts correctly, ensuring IT and business work together effectively.
